In this new-ish town with all these fairly new people, I am reminded that the world is really quite small and everyone really knows everyone by not that many folks in between. Sometimes, the degrees of separation dwindle to nothing.
I was a friend’s house for a BBQ the other day and neighbors that I have never met came to play and say hello. As we got to chatting, one woman and I discovered that we had both traveled to the same remote country in Asia, lived in the same city there, within blocks of each other and only one year apart. We knew the same people from this little community on the other side of the world, reminisced about the food, the language, the friends and the culture, and stood in awe as we were reminded of these experiences from the past that few people understand.
I love the little things like that – the reminders that we are all connected and the world is shaped and formed through the net of that connection.
[Our responses and reactions to the things that happen around us reveal the depth of our character and nature. They are opportunities, also, to show the character and love of God. This Lenten Season I am practicing awareness by looking for deep truth in everyday things. Check out other posts under Lent.]
